Menopause

Menopause is the point twelve months after a woman's last period, usually between 45 and 55, when the ovaries stop releasing eggs and oestrogen falls. The years around it, perimenopause, can bring hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes, vaginal dryness and irregular bleeding. After menopause, lower oestrogen raises the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, so this is also the time to check bone density, blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar. Iswarya Hospital's gynaecologists offer menopause consultations that cover symptom relief, including menopausal hormone therapy where it is safe and appropriate, non-hormonal options, local oestrogen for dryness, and a bone health plan. Bleeding after menopause is never normal and is investigated promptly with an ultrasound and, if needed, a hysteroscopy.

⚠️ Common Symptoms

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Irregular, heavier or lighter periods before they stop
  • Poor sleep, low mood, anxiety or irritability
  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse and urinary urgency
  • Joint aches and thinning hair or skin
  • Any bleeding after periods have stopped for a year (needs urgent review)
