Why HPV Vaccination & Cervical Cancer Screening Matter

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India, claiming over 75,000 lives every year. Almost 99% of cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) — most often HPV types 16 and 18. The good news: cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when prevention and early detection are combined.

At Iswarya Hospital, our women's health team offers a complete prevention pathway — HPV vaccination for girls, boys, and adults to stop infection before it starts; and cervical cancer screening using Pap smear, HPV DNA test, or co-testing to catch any cellular changes years before they become cancerous. Together, vaccination and routine screening prevent more than 90% of cervical cancers.

Prevention

HPV Vaccination — HPV Vaccine for Girls, Boys & Adults

The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective cancer-prevention vaccines ever developed. A complete course protects against the HPV strains that cause over 90% of cervical, anal, vulvar, vaginal, and many head-and-neck cancers, plus genital warts.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

  • Girls & boys aged 9–14: 2 doses, 6 months apart (best protection)
  • Catch-up 15–26 years: 3 doses at 0, 2, and 6 months
  • Adults 27–45 years: Recommended after a discussion with your gynaecologist
  • • Both sexually active and not-yet-active individuals benefit

Vaccines we offer

  • Gardasil 9 — 9-valent (MSD), protects against 9 HPV types including 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58. Gold-standard global vaccine.
  • Cervavac — Indigenous quadrivalent vaccine (Serum Institute of India), protects against HPV 6, 11, 16, 18. More affordable option.

What to expect on vaccination day

  1. 1. Brief consultation with the gynaecologist to review medical history
  2. 2. Vaccine administered as a single intramuscular injection in the upper arm
  3. 3. 15-minute observation in our women's wing
  4. 4. Reminder for the next dose sent via SMS / call

Cervical Cancer Screening — HPV DNA Test, Pap Smear & Co-Testing

HPV screening detects high-risk infection or cellular changes in the cervix years before cancer can develop. Our gynaecology team offers all three internationally recommended screening modalities, with results reviewed in a follow-up consultation.

Pap Smear

Cytology · Ages 21–29

Cells are collected from the cervix and examined under the microscope for precancerous changes. Recommended every 3 years for women under 30.

HPV DNA Test

Primary screening · Ages 30–65

Detects high-risk HPV strains (16, 18 and others) in cervical cells before any cellular changes occur. Most sensitive test — recommended every 5 years.

Co-Test (Pap + HPV DNA)

Combined · Ages 30–65

Both tests run on the same sample for the highest accuracy. Recommended every 5 years if results are normal.

What to expect during HPV screening

  • ✓ Private examination room with female gynaecologist & nurse
  • ✓ Sample collection takes under 5 minutes — mild pressure, no incision, no anaesthesia
  • ✓ Sample sent to our NABL-accredited lab
  • ✓ Results in 3–5 working days, reviewed in a follow-up visit or video consultation
  • ✓ If abnormal: colposcopy & biopsy available in-house, treated by our gynaec-oncology team

HPV & Cervical Cancer Screening — FAQs

What is the HPV vaccine and who should take it?

The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9 / Cervavac) protects against the human papillomavirus strains that cause >90% of cervical cancers, plus genital warts and several other HPV-linked cancers. It is recommended for girls and boys aged 9–14 (2 doses), with catch-up vaccination up to age 26 (3 doses). Women aged 27–45 may also benefit — discuss with our gynaecologist.

What is the HPV DNA test?

The HPV DNA test detects high-risk HPV strains (such as HPV 16 and 18) in cervical cells before they cause cancer. A small sample is collected from the cervix during a quick pelvic examination — similar to a Pap smear. It is the most sensitive primary screening test for women aged 30 and above.

How is HPV screening done at Iswarya Hospital?

HPV screening is a 5-minute outpatient procedure performed by our female gynaecologists in a private examination room. A small brush collects cells from the cervix; the sample is sent to our NABL-accredited lab. Results are available in 3–5 working days and reviewed in a follow-up consultation.

Is cervical cancer screening painful?

No. Most women feel mild pressure or a brief cramp lasting a few seconds. The test takes less than 5 minutes. Our female gynaecologists prioritise comfort and privacy throughout.

What is the cost of HPV vaccination in Chennai?

HPV vaccine pricing at Iswarya Hospital starts from approximately ₹2,000–₹3,500 per dose for the indigenous Cervavac vaccine, and ₹7,500–₹10,500 per dose for Gardasil 9. Total course cost depends on age (2-dose under 15 vs 3-dose at 15+). Call 044 2025 2025 for current package pricing.

Pap smear vs HPV DNA test — which is better?

For women 21–29, the Pap smear (cytology) every 3 years is recommended. For women 30–65, primary HPV DNA testing every 5 years — or co-testing (Pap + HPV) every 5 years — is preferred because it detects high-risk HPV before cellular changes appear. Your gynaecologist will recommend the right approach for you.

At what age should I start cervical cancer screening?

Cervical cancer screening should begin at age 21, regardless of sexual history, and continue through age 65 in women with normal results. Screening frequency depends on your age and the type of test used. Earlier or more frequent screening may be recommended if you are immunocompromised or have a history of abnormal results.

Can men take the HPV vaccine?

Yes. The HPV vaccine is recommended for boys aged 9–14 (2 doses) with catch-up to age 26 (3 doses). It protects against genital warts, anal cancer, and several head-and-neck cancers caused by HPV, and reduces transmission to partners.

Is HPV vaccination safe?

Yes. The HPV vaccine has been used safely worldwide for over 15 years, with hundreds of millions of doses administered. The most common side effects are mild — soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or headache lasting 1–2 days. Serious adverse events are extremely rare.

How often should I get screened for cervical cancer?

Women aged 21–29: Pap smear every 3 years. Women aged 30–65: HPV DNA test every 5 years, or HPV+Pap co-test every 5 years, or Pap smear alone every 3 years. After age 65 with consistently normal results, screening may stop. After hysterectomy for benign reasons, screening is generally not needed.
