High-Risk Pregnancy
A pregnancy is called high-risk when a condition in the mother or baby needs closer monitoring than routine antenatal care. Common reasons include diabetes, high blood pressure or thyroid disease, pregnancy after 35, twins, IVF pregnancy, a previous caesarean, previous miscarriage or preterm birth, and placenta problems such as placenta praevia. High-risk does not mean something will go wrong; it means more frequent visits, extra scans and a delivery plan agreed in advance. Iswarya Hospital's obstetricians care for high-risk pregnancies with the emergency department, operation theatres, blood bank, ICU and NICU on the same campus, so the team can act within minutes if mother or baby needs help. Painless delivery and planned or emergency caesarean are available 24×7 with an obstetrician and anaesthetist in-house.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Blood pressure of 140/90 or higher, swelling of the face or hands, severe headache or blurred vision
- High blood sugar on the glucose tolerance test
- Vaginal bleeding at any stage of pregnancy
- Fewer baby movements than usual after 28 weeks
- Baby measuring small or large for dates on scan
- Regular contractions, leaking fluid or pelvic pressure before 37 weeks
