Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that first appears during pregnancy, usually between 24 and 28 weeks, when pregnancy hormones make the body less responsive to insulin. It affects roughly one in six to eight pregnancies in India and most women have no symptoms, which is why every pregnant woman at Iswarya Hospital is screened with a glucose tolerance test. Left untreated it raises the risk of a large baby, difficult delivery, pre-eclampsia, newborn low blood sugar and, later in life, type 2 diabetes for the mother. Our obstetricians manage it as a high-risk pregnancy with a diet plan, home glucose monitoring, regular growth scans and, when needed, metformin or insulin. Most women deliver a healthy baby at term, and blood sugar returns to normal after birth in the majority of cases.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms; detected on the 24 to 28 week glucose test
- Unusual thirst and frequent urination
- Tiredness beyond what is normal in pregnancy
- Recurrent urinary or vaginal infections
- A baby measuring large for dates on scan
- Excess amniotic fluid on ultrasound
