Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal, most often in the lower back, from thickened ligaments, bulging discs and arthritic joints that develop with age. The hallmark is neurogenic claudication: aching, heaviness or numbness in both legs that comes on with walking or standing and eases quickly on sitting or leaning forward, which is why people with stenosis find it easier to push a trolley than to walk upright. Iswarya Hospital's neurosurgeons confirm the diagnosis on MRI and start with physiotherapy, medicines and epidural steroid injections. When walking distance keeps shrinking or weakness appears, laminectomy to decompress the nerves, with spinal fusion if the spine is unstable, reliably restores walking distance. Most patients walk the day after surgery.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Aching, cramping or heaviness in both legs on walking or standing
- Relief within minutes of sitting down or bending forward
- Numbness or tingling in the buttocks, thighs or feet
- Lower back pain that is often milder than the leg symptoms
- Weakness or foot drop in advanced cases
- Loss of balance or bladder changes (needs prompt review)
