Neurology

Pituitary Tumour

The pituitary is a pea-sized gland at the base of the brain that controls the thyroid, adrenal glands, growth, fertility and milk production. Pituitary tumours (adenomas) are almost always benign, but they cause problems in two ways: by producing excess hormone, such as prolactin, growth hormone or cortisol, or by growing large enough to press on the optic nerves and cause loss of side vision. Iswarya Hospital's neurosurgeons and endocrinologists work together: prolactin-secreting tumours are usually treated with tablets alone, while larger or other hormone-producing tumours are removed through the nose by endoscopic endonasal surgery with the ENT team, leaving no external scar. MRI with pituitary protocol, full hormone testing and visual field assessment are available on site, and follow-up continues with endocrinology after surgery.

⚠️ Common Symptoms

  • Loss of outer (peripheral) vision or blurred vision
  • Persistent headache behind the eyes
  • Irregular or absent periods and milky nipple discharge (high prolactin)
  • Enlarging hands, feet or jaw and changing shoe or ring size (acromegaly)
  • Weight gain on the trunk and face, easy bruising and high blood pressure (Cushing's disease)
  • Tiredness, low libido and infertility from low pituitary hormones
