Cervical Spondylosis
Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear of the discs and joints of the neck. By the age of 60 most people show it on an X-ray, and for the majority it causes only occasional neck stiffness. Problems arise when bone spurs or a bulging disc press on a nerve root (cervical radiculopathy, causing arm pain and tingling) or on the spinal cord itself (cervical myelopathy, causing clumsy hands, unsteady walking and bladder changes). Iswarya Hospital's neurosurgeons and physiotherapists treat most cases without surgery, using posture correction, neck strengthening, medicines and targeted injections. Surgery, such as anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or laminoplasty, is advised when the spinal cord is compressed or arm weakness is progressive, because cord compression does not reverse on its own.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness, worse after long hours at a desk or on a phone
- Pain, tingling or numbness radiating into the shoulder, arm or fingers
- Weakness or clumsiness in the hands, difficulty with buttons or writing
- Unsteady walking or a feeling of heavy legs (cord compression)
- Headaches starting at the back of the head
- Grinding sensation when turning the neck
