Brain Aneurysm
A brain aneurysm is a weak, balloon-like bulge in the wall of an artery in the brain. Most are small, cause no symptoms and are found by chance on a scan. The danger is rupture, which causes a subarachnoid haemorrhage: a sudden, severe 'thunderclap' headache that is a medical emergency. Iswarya Hospital's neurosurgery team evaluates aneurysms with CT angiography and MRI, and treats them by microsurgical clipping through a craniotomy or by endovascular coiling, depending on the size, shape and location of the aneurysm and the patient's overall health. Unruptured aneurysms are monitored or treated electively based on rupture risk. The 24×7 emergency department, CT scanner and Neuro ICU on OMR allow a ruptured aneurysm to be diagnosed and treated without transfer.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Sudden, severe headache unlike any experienced before (rupture)
- Neck stiffness, nausea and vomiting with the headache
- Drooping eyelid, double vision or a dilated pupil (pressure on a nerve)
- Pain above or behind one eye
- Loss of consciousness or seizure after a sudden headache
- Often no symptoms at all until found on a scan
