Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome affects 1 in 5 Indian women. Learn how to recognise it, understand its causes, and manage it effectively.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts. It is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age.

Common Symptoms

  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Excess hair growth on face, chest, or back (hirsutism)
  • Acne and oily skin
  • Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
  • Thinning hair or hair loss on the scalp
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Causes

  • Insulin resistance (common in ~70% of PCOS patients)
  • Elevated androgen (male hormone) levels
  • Genetics / family history
  • Low-grade inflammation

Diagnosis Diagnosed using the Rotterdam Criteria: at least 2 of 3 — irregular periods, elevated androgens, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.

Management Lifestyle changes (first-line treatment):

  • Losing even 5–10% of body weight can restore ovulation
  • Low glycaemic index diet
  • Regular exercise — 150 mins/week of moderate intensity

Medical treatments:

  • Hormonal contraceptives to regulate periods
  • Metformin for insulin resistance
  • Clomiphene or letrozole for fertility
