IUI is the most affordable fertility treatment, but the total cost in Chennai depends on more than the procedure fee. Learn what is included, how ovulation medicines, monitoring scans, sperm preparation and the number of cycles change the total, and how to compare quotes.
IUI treatment cost in Chennai — quick answers
How much does IUI cost in Chennai?
A single IUI cycle in Chennai commonly costs in the range of ₹10,000 to ₹25,000, depending on whether medicines, scans and sperm preparation are included. Confirm exactly what a quoted price covers before comparing clinics.
What is included in the IUI cost?
Usually the insemination procedure and sperm preparation. Ovulation-inducing medicines, monitoring ultrasound scans, the trigger injection, blood tests and any consultation fees may be billed separately.
How many IUI cycles are needed?
Most pregnancies from IUI happen within the first 3 to 4 cycles. If IUI has not worked after 3 to 4 attempts, IVF is usually advised, so budgeting for more than one cycle is realistic.
Is IUI cheaper than IVF?
Yes, substantially. An IUI cycle is a fraction of the cost of an IVF cycle, but IVF has a much higher success rate per attempt, so the right choice depends on the cause of infertility, not price alone.
Does insurance cover IUI in India?
Most standard health policies exclude infertility treatment, though some newer plans include limited maternity or fertility benefits. Check your policy wording or ask the hospital's insurance desk.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is often the first treatment offered to couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor, ovulation problems or cervical issues. It is simple, takes minutes, and is far less expensive than IVF. But "the IUI cost" quoted by different clinics can mean very different things. Here is what actually goes into the total.
What happens in an IUI cycle
- Ovulation is either tracked naturally or stimulated with tablets or low-dose injections.
- Follicle growth is monitored with two to four ultrasound scans.
- A trigger injection times ovulation.
- The partner's semen sample is washed and concentrated in the laboratory.
- The prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus through a thin catheter, close to the time of ovulation.
- A pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.
Each of those steps has a cost, and clinics bundle them differently.
The six factors that change the total
1. The type of cycle: natural or stimulated
A natural-cycle IUI uses no ovulation medicines and is the cheapest. Most cycles use ovulation induction: letrozole or clomiphene tablets add only a few hundred rupees, while gonadotropin injections can add several thousand rupees per cycle depending on the dose and number of days.
2. Monitoring scans and blood tests
Follicle-tracking scans are essential for timing the insemination. Two to four transvaginal scans per cycle are typical, and some patients need hormone blood tests as well. Ask whether these are part of the package or charged per visit.
3. Sperm preparation and the source of sperm
Washing and preparing the partner's sample is usually included in the procedure fee. If donor sperm is needed, the cost of the donor sample from a licensed sperm bank is added, and it is significant.
4. Single or double insemination
Some clinics perform two inseminations in one cycle, 12 to 24 hours apart. Evidence for a benefit is limited, and it roughly doubles the procedure charge, so ask why it is being recommended.
5. The number of cycles
Success per IUI cycle is about 10 to 20 percent, so a fair budget is for three cycles. Some hospitals offer multi-cycle packages at a lower per-cycle rate.
6. Pre-treatment tests
Before the first cycle you will need a semen analysis, a check that the fallopian tubes are open (HSG or a saline scan), hormone tests and infection screening. These are one-time costs and are not part of the cycle fee.
How to compare quotes properly
Ask each clinic for a written breakdown that answers these questions:
- Is the consultation fee separate?
- Are ovulation medicines and the trigger injection included, and which ones?
- How many monitoring scans are included, and what does an extra scan cost?
- Is sperm preparation included?
- What is the charge for a second insemination, if advised?
- Is there a package rate for three cycles?
A low headline price with scans and medicines billed separately can end up costing more than an inclusive package.
When IUI is not the right first step
IUI needs at least one open fallopian tube, a reasonable sperm count after washing, and, ideally, a woman under about 38. If the tubes are blocked, the sperm count is very low, or age is a concern, spending on repeated IUI cycles delays the treatment that is more likely to work, and IVF is the better use of both time and money.
