Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain, which raises pressure inside the skull. In babies it is usually present from birth or follows a bleed or infection and shows as a rapidly enlarging head. In adults it can follow a head injury, bleed, tumour or meningitis, or appear in older people as normal pressure hydrocephalus, where an unsteady walk, memory decline and urinary urgency are mistaken for ageing. Iswarya Hospital's neurosurgeons diagnose it with CT or MRI and treat it by placing a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt that drains fluid to the abdomen, or by endoscopic third ventriculostomy in suitable patients, which creates a new fluid pathway without a shunt. Paediatric and adult cases are managed with neonatology, neurology and the Neuro ICU on one campus.
⚠️ Common Symptoms

- Headache worse in the morning, with nausea or vomiting
- Blurred or double vision
- Unsteady, shuffling walk
- Memory problems, slowed thinking and personality change
- Urinary urgency or incontinence (normal pressure hydrocephalus)
