Head Injury
A head injury ranges from a mild concussion to a life-threatening bleed inside the skull. Road traffic accidents and falls are the commonest causes in Chennai, and the first hours decide the outcome. Iswarya Hospital's emergency department on OMR has a CT scanner available round the clock and a neurosurgeon on call 24×7, so a brain bleed can be diagnosed and operated on without transfer. Treatment depends on the scan: observation and neuro checks for a concussion; burr-hole drainage for a chronic subdural haematoma; craniotomy to remove an acute clot; or decompressive craniectomy to relieve dangerous brain swelling, with recovery in the dedicated Neuro ICU. Older adults on blood thinners can bleed slowly for days or weeks after a minor fall, so a new headache or confusion after a knock to the head always needs a scan.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
- Loss of consciousness, even briefly, after the injury
- Worsening headache, repeated vomiting or drowsiness
- Confusion, slurred speech or unusual behaviour
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
- Clear fluid or blood from the nose or ears
- Seizure, unequal pupils or difficulty waking
