What causes fainting?

Vasovagal faint

The common faint. Preceded by nausea, sweating, ringing in the ears or greying vision, and recovery is quick.

Low blood pressure on standing

Often related to dehydration, blood pressure tablets or prolonged bed rest.

Heart rhythm disorder

A very slow or very fast rhythm reducing blood flow to the brain, often without any warning symptoms.

Structural heart disease

Narrowed valves or weakened pumping, typically causing faints during exertion.

Seizure

Distinguished by jerking, tongue biting, incontinence and prolonged confusion afterwards.

How it is investigated

  • ✓ECG and blood pressure lying and standing
  • ✓Holter monitoring for intermittent rhythm disorders
  • ✓Echocardiogram where a structural cause is suspected
  • ✓Haemoglobin and blood sugar

Not every patient needs every test. The consultation decides which of these apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fainting and a seizure?▼

A faint usually has warning symptoms, brief loss of consciousness, and quick full recovery. A seizure more often involves sustained jerking, tongue biting, loss of bladder control, and confusion lasting many minutes afterwards. Brief twitching can occur in a faint too, so an eyewitness account is valuable.

When does fainting need emergency care?▼

If it happened during exertion, with no warning, with chest pain or palpitations, caused injury, or if there is a family history of sudden death. Those patterns raise the possibility of a cardiac cause and should be assessed the same day.
