Stapler Circumcision

⏱ Duration: 10–15 mins🏥 Recovery: 1–2 weeks

What is Stapler Circumcision? Stapler circumcision uses a single-use circular stapler that removes the foreskin and simultaneously closes the wound with a ring of fine silicone-coated staples. The device produces an even, symmetrical cut in about ten minutes with almost no bleeding, avoiding the hand-sewn stitches of conventional circumcision. Typical duration at Iswarya Hospital, OMR Chennai: 10–15 mins. Recovery: 1–2 weeks.

The staples fall off by themselves within 2–3 weeks. It is particularly popular with adults and older children because of the short procedure time, tidy cosmetic result and quick return to work.

How is Stapler Circumcision performed?

  1. 1

Local block or short general anaesthesia is given.

  2. 2

The correct size of stapler is chosen by measuring the glans.

  3. 3

The inner bell of the device is placed over the glans and the foreskin is drawn over it.

  4. 4

The outer ring is closed and the device is fired, cutting the foreskin and applying the staple ring.

  5. 5

The device is removed and a light dressing applied.

  6. 6

The staples fall away on their own over the following weeks.

Frequently asked questions about Stapler Circumcision

Do the staples hurt?

The staples are tiny and silicone-coated. They cause mild irritation at most and fall off with normal washing over 2–3 weeks.

Is stapler circumcision better than the conventional method?

It is faster with less bleeding and a very neat result. The conventional method is still preferred when the foreskin is heavily scarred or when a stapler of the right size is not suitable. Both give an excellent outcome.

Can adults have stapler circumcision under local anaesthesia?

Yes. A penile block is given and the procedure is painless. Most adults go home within an hour.
