Diagnostic Laparoscopy

⏱ Duration: 30–60 mins🏥 Recovery: 3–7 days

What is Diagnostic Laparoscopy? Diagnostic laparoscopy lets the surgeon look directly at the organs of the abdomen and pelvis through a camera inserted at the navel. Typical duration at Iswarya Hospital, OMR Chennai: 30–60 mins. Recovery: 3–7 days.

It is used when scans and blood tests have not explained persistent abdominal pain, to assess suspected endometriosis, adhesions or tubal disease in infertility, to stage cancers, and to evaluate abdominal injury. Biopsies can be taken and many findings, such as adhesions, ovarian cysts or an inflamed appendix, can be treated during the same procedure, avoiding a second operation.

How is Diagnostic Laparoscopy performed?

  1. 1

    General anaesthesia is given.

  2. 2

A small incision is made at the navel and the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide.

  3. 3

The laparoscope is inserted and the abdomen and pelvis are systematically inspected.

  4. 4

One or two extra 5 mm ports are placed if instruments are needed.

  5. 5

Biopsies are taken or the problem is treated where possible.

  6. 6

The gas is released and the incisions closed with dissolving stitches.

What are the benefits of Diagnostic Laparoscopy?

  • ✓Direct view of organs that scans cannot fully assess
  • ✓Diagnosis and treatment in one sitting in most cases
  • ✓Small incisions and a short recovery
  • ✓Tissue biopsies for an accurate diagnosis
  • ✓Usually day care or a single-night stay

How do you prepare for Diagnostic Laparoscopy?

  • Fast for 6–8 hours before the procedure.
  • Blood tests and any recent scan reports are reviewed.
  • Tell the surgeon about previous abdominal surgery, which increases the chance of adhesions.
  • Stop blood thinners as instructed.
  • Arrange to be collected and accompanied home.

What are the risks and side effects of Diagnostic Laparoscopy?

  • Injury to bowel, bladder or blood vessels during port insertion (rare)
  • Shoulder-tip pain from the gas for 1–2 days
  • Wound infection or bruising at port sites
  • Rarely no cause is found despite a thorough look
  • Conversion to open surgery if a major problem is found

Your surgeon will discuss all risks with you before the procedure and take appropriate precautions to minimise them.

What is recovery like after Diagnostic Laparoscopy?

  • Walk the same day; shoulder pain from gas settles within 48 hours.
  • Eat and drink normally once awake.
  • Keep the small dressings dry for 48 hours.
  • Return to desk work within 3–5 days.
  • Review with biopsy results at 1–2 weeks to plan further treatment.

Frequently asked questions about Diagnostic Laparoscopy

Will you treat the problem during the laparoscopy?

Whenever safe, yes. Adhesions, endometriosis deposits, ovarian cysts and an inflamed appendix are commonly dealt with in the same operation. You will be asked to consent for likely treatments beforehand.

How long does the whole process take?

The procedure itself takes 30–60 minutes. Including admission and recovery, most patients are in hospital for 6–8 hours or one night.

Is diagnostic laparoscopy used for infertility?

Yes. It shows whether the fallopian tubes are open, and identifies endometriosis or adhesions that scans miss. Treatment at the same time can improve the chance of pregnancy.
