Anoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure used to treat anal stenosis and severe haemorrhoid scarring. Here's what to expect from the procedure and recovery.
Anoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair or reconstruct the anal opening (anus). It is most commonly performed for anal stenosis — a narrowing of the anus that causes painful, difficult defaecation.
Conditions Treated by Anoplasty
- Anal stenosis — narrowing due to previous haemorrhoid surgery, trauma, or scarring
- Anal ectropion — outward displacement of rectal mucosa
- Congenital anal anomalies — sometimes corrected in combination with other procedures
- Severe scarring after radiation or inflammatory disease
Types of Anoplasty
- Island flap anoplasty — most common; skin flap from the buttock is advanced to widen the anal opening
- Y-V anoplasty — a Y-shaped incision is converted to a V-shape to widen the canal
- House or diamond flap — for more extensive stenosis
The Procedure
- Performed under general or spinal anaesthesia
- Takes 1–2 hours
- Hospital stay: 1–2 days
- Sutures are usually dissolvable
Benefits of Anoplasty
- ✅ Relieves pain and straining during bowel movements
- ✅ Restores normal anal calibre
- ✅ Improves quality of life significantly
- ✅ High success rate (>85%) in experienced hands
Recovery Timeline
| Period | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | Mild-moderate pain, managed with medication |
| Week 1–2 | Wound care, sitz baths twice daily |
| Week 3–4 | Gradual improvement, return to light activities |
| Week 6–8 | Full healing; can resume normal activity |
Dietary Guidance During Recovery
- High-fibre diet is essential to avoid constipation
- Stool softeners as prescribed
- 2–3 litres of water daily
- Avoid spicy foods for the first 2 weeks
