A quick guide to anoplasty — what the surgery involves, how long recovery takes, and what to do to heal well.

Anoplasty is a reconstructive procedure to widen or repair the anal canal, most often needed after anal stenosis caused by previous haemorrhoid surgery or scarring.

Quick Overview

  • Duration: 1–2 hours
  • Anaesthesia: General or spinal
  • Hospital stay: 1–2 days
  • Recovery: 6–8 weeks for full healing
  • Success rate: 85–90%

Procedure Summary

The surgeon creates a skin or tissue flap near the anus and advances it to widen the anal opening. Dissolvable sutures are used. The wound heals over 6–8 weeks with proper care.

Recovery Essentials

  1. Sitz baths — warm water soaks 2–3 times daily for the first 4 weeks
  2. Stool softeners — essential to prevent straining
  3. High-fibre diet — from day 1 post-surgery
  4. Wound dressing — changed daily as instructed by your nurse
  5. Pain management — paracetamol and NSAIDs as prescribed
  6. Avoid sitting for prolonged periods — use a donut cushion

When to Call the Surgeon

  • Fever above 38°C
  • Increasing pain or swelling after day 3
  • Wound separation or bleeding
  • Inability to pass stool for more than 3 days
