About Neurosurgery
Medically reviewed by Dr. Deepa Avadhani, Senior Consultant Neurologist · Updated 9 October 2026
The Neurosurgery department at Iswarya Hospital treats disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves that need surgery. Our neurosurgeons work with neurologists, neuro-anaesthetists and intensivists, and have round-the-clock access to CT, MRI and a neuro-critical care unit.
Wherever it is safe to do so we use minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques, which mean smaller incisions, less blood loss and a faster return home.
What We Treat & Offer
Brain Tumor, Spine Tumors
Microsurgical removal of benign and malignant tumours of the brain and spinal cord, planned with MRI navigation and followed by oncology care where needed.
Brain Injury
24×7 care for head injuries from accidents and falls, including emergency surgery to remove blood clots and relieve pressure on the brain, and neuro-ICU monitoring.
Focused Brain Surgery
Targeted procedures for conditions such as hydrocephalus, aneurysms and movement disorders, using image guidance to reach the affected area with minimal disturbance to healthy brain.
Complex Spine Surgery
Surgery for spinal cord compression, spinal fractures, instability and deformity, including decompression and instrumented fixation.
Craniotomy & Cranial Surgery
Opening a window in the skull under the microscope to reach tumours, blood clots, aneurysms and abscesses. Approaches include pterional, supraorbital (eyebrow), bifrontal, retrosigmoid and suboccipital craniotomy, chosen to give the safest route to the problem.
Decompressive Craniectomy
Emergency removal of a section of skull to relieve dangerous pressure after severe head injury, large stroke or brain swelling. The bone is stored and replaced once the swelling settles.
Neuronavigation (Navigation-Guided Surgery)
GPS-like image guidance links the patient's MRI and CT to the instruments in theatre, so the surgeon reaches deep or small lesions through a smaller opening with less disturbance to healthy brain.
Meningioma Excision
Microsurgical removal of meningiomas, the commonest benign brain tumours, including those on the skull base and along the venous sinuses, with navigation planning to preserve nerves and vessels.
Skull Base Surgery
Surgery for tumours at the base of the skull, such as meningiomas, chordomas and schwannomas, using microscopic and endoscopic approaches that reach the tumour with minimal brain retraction.
Pituitary Surgery (Endoscopic Endonasal)
Pituitary adenomas and selected skull-base tumours are removed through the nostril with an endoscope, avoiding any external cut. Performed with the ENT team, with endocrinology follow-up.
Vestibular Schwannoma (Acoustic Neuroma)
Removal of tumours on the hearing and balance nerve through a retrosigmoid craniotomy, with facial nerve monitoring during surgery to protect facial movement.
Intraventricular Tumour Excision
Microsurgical or endoscopic removal of tumours growing inside the fluid-filled ventricles of the brain, often combined with treatment of the hydrocephalus they cause.
Colloid Cyst Surgery
Endoscopic or microsurgical removal of colloid cysts at the third ventricle, which can block fluid flow and cause sudden headaches. Removal is curative.
Foramen Magnum Decompression
Surgery for Chiari malformation and related conditions, enlarging the opening at the base of the skull to relieve pressure on the brainstem and restore fluid flow.
Burr Hole Surgery for Subdural Haematoma
Chronic subdural haematoma, a slow blood collection over the brain common in older adults after minor falls, is drained through one or two small burr holes, often under local anaesthesia.
Stereotactic Brain Biopsy
A needle biopsy of a deep brain lesion through a tiny opening, guided by navigation or a stereotactic frame, to obtain a diagnosis without open surgery.
VP Shunt (Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt)
A thin tube with a valve diverts excess brain fluid to the abdomen to treat hydrocephalus in children and adults, relieving headache, vomiting and drowsiness.
Brain Abscess Aspiration
Navigation-guided drainage of pus collections in the brain through a burr hole, combined with a prolonged course of antibiotics; open excision for thick-walled or recurrent abscesses.
