An insect in the ear is a surprisingly common ENT emergency. Here's what to do โ and what NOT to do โ before seeing a doctor.
An insect trapped in the ear canal is a distressing situation that can happen to anyone, especially during outdoor activities or while sleeping. The buzzing or movement of a live insect in the ear can be extremely uncomfortable and even painful.
Immediate Steps to Take
1. Stay calm โ panicking can cause the insect to move deeper
2. Tilt your head โ tilt the affected ear downward; gravity may help the insect fall out
3. Use mineral oil or baby oil โ pour a few drops of body-temperature oil into the ear canal to suffocate a live insect, then tilt the head to let it drain out
4. Try a flashlight โ some insects are attracted to light; shining a torch into the ear may encourage it to crawl out
5. Use water (if no eardrum perforation) โ gently flush with room-temperature water using a dropper
